Experience Makes The Best Teachers !

Asheville Guitar founder Mike Barnes is a North Carolina native and was inspired to play guitar at the early age of eleven years old, studying classical guitar with the late great Jerry Young. While growing up in Asheville as a teen he formed a band with childhood friend Warren Haynes and spent many rehearsal hours working on the art of improvisation. Mike went on to study music at the University of Miami school of music in the late 70's and then moved to Los Angeles to enroll at Musician's Institute graduating in 1981. He also graduated from UNCA where he has served on the music faculty since 1995. Mike also previously served on the music faculty at Appalachian State University. He has recorded on countless recording sessions in Memphis, Nashville, and Los Angeles and was signed to recording contracts with Geffen and Polygram records. Mike has been Blessed to study and share the stage with some of the worlds greatest and most influential guitarists and musicians. Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule, Jimmy Page, Pat Martino, John Scofield, Joe Walsh, The Allman Brothers Band, Robben Ford, Jimmy Herring, Derek Trucks, Ben Harper, John Paul Jones, Branford Marsalis, Neal Larson, Jeff Sipe, Jerry Jemmott, The Black Crows, Dave Grohl, Moe, String Cheese Incident, Grace Potter, Steve Miller, Bill Evans, George Porter Jr. and Slash to name a few. Mike's experience on the road, in recording studios and in various bands through the years taught him that everyone learns music in different ways. This is why we invite new students to participate in a music knowledge test. From there we can determine where the student's musical knowledge and skills are and build a learning program that best fits their background and learning style. Our teaching process is unique to each student.
